Drawing is a habit that forms the foundation to Thompson’s work, and is carried out using a variety of implements and diverse methods including crayon, pencil, pen and ink, gouache, ink and twig, conté and graphite. It is with the use of black and white conté, however, that his drawings achieve the classical softness and subtleness of light and shade that lends itself, in particular, to his nude studies.
